This moving artwork shows the Virgin Mary stretching out her arms to embrace Her Son Jesus Christ, Who hangs on the Cross. The apostle St. John stands next to Mother Mary to comfort her. The intent of the artist could have very well been to depict the moment, recounted in John 19:26-7, when Our Lord speaks from the Cross, saying to Mary, "Behold thy son", and to John, "Behold thy mother".
